ready to hear the cougars call?

Canterbury Cougars is a family, not-for-profit club, run by volunteers that simply love everything basketball. We offer the opportunity for friends to start their own teams in any age-group from Under 8’s OR, join individually and have the opportunity to play at a more competitive grade.

With almost 50 teams and 1000+ members in the new Community Basketball League, we continue to grow and have teams of varying abilities and skills and actively encourage participation from players of all ages.

We are focused on offering a well-rounded introduction to basketball, through to representative ready players. Our aim is to help grow player’s self-confidence, through teaching skills, sportsmanship, team play, respect for teammates and referees and a general love of basketball.

We have built a strong community through a family first culture, which develops lifelong friendships, in a fun and social environment. In addition, we continue to provide pathways to representative basketball, with a few players having gone on to represent Australia.

SUMMER SEASON AGE GROUPS:
Age grouping is probably the biggest change moving into the Community Basketball League which is used across almost all other associations.  See the age grouping dates of birth below. The reason why almost all other Associations run this way is that it allows for players born at any point in the year to get a mixed experience of being top age and bottom age. This prevents the December born players from always being young and the January born players from always being at the older end of the age group.
