Canterbury Cougars has become the great Club it is today from the ongoing commitment of many volunteers. However sometimes there are just people who go above and beyond, and we’d like to acknowledge those members here as Life Members of Canterbury Cougars Basketball Club.

Hear the Cougars Call…
Maggie McBain - 1993-2011
Cougars life started for me as a mother and coach. My daughter Jill joined the first mixed team in 1993 in the U9 competition. The team needed a coach so I stepped up and stayed coaching until I retired in 2011. Coaching junior teams was such a rewarding experience, along with providing ‘coach the coach’ sessions to encourage young students to take up coaching in a growing club. Transitioning to the role of U9/11 Grade Secretary at the HBA as a Cougars representative was another great way for me to contribute, especially in helping manage and organize the Club Secretaries.
I have some special memories of my time at Cougars including the end-of-season BBQs, awards days, and working with a dedicated committee—these are the kinds of experiences that stay with you long after the games are over.
My experience has been incredibly fulfilling, especially seeing young players grow in both skill and confidence. There’s something special about being a part of a child’s first experiences in team sports, helping them not only develop their game but also understand the joy of teamwork & effort. That blend of fun, development, and the excitement of mastering new skills made coaching such a rewarding experience.
I am now working part time and enjoying a semi-retirement. I am a keen armchair sportsperson.
